Vancouver friends, Applied Silence will be performing as part of Barking Sphinx’s Lost Dog series at the Hargrove on October 25. Stephen and José will be joined by the lovely and talented A/S alumni Shanto Acharia (Fond of Tigers), Paul Rigby (Neko Case), and Ida Nilsen, aka Great Aunt Ida,, who will also perform an opening set.
We'll play songs (and not-songs) from Finisher, our work in progress exploring themes of labour, migration, and family. It will be a night of post-rock atmospherics, documentary recordings, melodic reveries, and multilingual storytelling in a beautiful space. Come.

Following a spookily successful debut at Edmonton’s Metro Cinema last month, Applied Silence will bring a new iteration of its original live score for Vampyr to Vancouver’s mighty Cinematheque… on Halloween! For this very special, one-night-only event, Stephen and José will be joined by Fond of Tigers alumni Shanto Acharia and JP Carter, along with everyone’s favourite great aunt, Ida Nilsen, for 73 haunting minutes of guitars, brass, vocals, keys, field recordings, sundry percussive things, rattles, drones, and eerie electronics.

Applied Silence is one of many artists to be graciously included in the Glasgow-based sound art extravaganza Radiophrenia, which broadcasts over airwaves and interwebs twenty-four hours a day from September 5-20. On September 17, at 10:00 PM Scotland time, you can listen to our 17-minute audio dialogue Ghost Weight, the soundtrack to our film Binary Star, which features music composed and performed by Stephen and words written by José and performed by Steven Hill and Marion Landers. Edmonton, we will not abandon you. Two days after we make pretty spooky sounds in tandem with Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Vampyr for Metro Cinema, we’re going to play work songs on a loading dock at a place where things are made (in this case: beer). Double Lunch Productions has curated two days of live music in celebration of Bent Stick Brewery’s birthday. Edmonton friends, we are coming to your city. On Friday, August 28, we’ll be at Metro Cinema to perform live accompaniment to an exquisitely weird movie.
Carl Theodor Dreyer's most alluringly enigmatic film follows a young devotee of the occult who wanders into a French village cursed by a vampire. Riddled with sourceless shadows and daylight doppelgängers, Vampyr (1932) was long considered Dreyer's bête noir, but has gradually emerged as one of the era's most influential works of experimental narrative cinema.
This one-night-only Edmonton screening will feature original live accompaniment from Applied Silence—whose 2023 LP Screen Door shares several of Vampyr's themes. Led by composers Stephen Lyons and author-performer José Teodoro, and rounded out by local artists Sean Fulton and Twilla MacLeod, the quartet will forge an original soundscape of guitars, vocals, percussion, keys, and electronics, leaning heavy into atmospherics and hallucinatory lyricism.

West Coast friends, on February 26 at Tyrant Studios, Applied Silence will perform two sets, one consisting of radically reimagined selections from our debut LP Screen Door + one of new songs from Finisher, our project in development. Following fieldwork in Vancouver and Calgary, Applied Silence spent the bounteous week of February 3 to 8 hiding from deep freeze and global hellscape, developing new work under the auspices of Playwrights Workshop Montreal. We made sundry sounds in the studio with fellow artists Ben Brown, Michael Feuerstack, Holly Gauthier-Frankel, and Nicolas Royer-Artuso. The PWM residency marks our maiden voyage to the world of Finisher, a song cycle about labour on land and sea, family-making and-breaking, and migration. More soon to come.
