Edmonton, we will not abandon you. Two days after we make pretty spooky sounds in tandem with Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Vampyr for Metro Cinema, we’re going to play work songs on a loading dock at a place where things are made (in this case: beer). Double Lunch Productions has curated two days of live music in celebration of Bent Stick Brewery’s birthday. Edmonton friends, we are coming to your city. On Friday, August 28, we’ll be at Metro Cinema to perform live accompaniment to an exquisitely weird movie.
Carl Theodor Dreyer's most alluringly enigmatic film follows a young devotee of the occult who wanders into a French village cursed by a vampire. Riddled with sourceless shadows and daylight doppelgängers, Vampyr (1932) was long considered Dreyer's bête noir, but has gradually emerged as one of the era's most influential works of experimental narrative cinema.
This one-night-only Edmonton screening will feature original live accompaniment from Applied Silence—whose 2023 LP Screen Door shares several of Vampyr's themes. Led by composers Stephen Lyons and author-performer José Teodoro, and rounded out by local artists Sean Fulton and Twilla MacLeod, the quartet will forge an original soundscape of guitars, vocals, percussion, keys, and electronics, leaning heavy into atmospherics and hallucinatory lyricism.

West Coast friends, on February 26 at Tyrant Studios, Applied Silence will perform two sets, one consisting of radically reimagined selections from our debut LP Screen Door + one of new songs from Finisher, our project in development. Applied Silence Janus-head Stephen & José will be joined by the lovely and talented Shanto Acharia & JP Carter (both Fond of Tigers), Daniel Deorksen (tyrant-in-chief), & Ida Nilsen (Great Aunt Ida, The Beans, et al). Following fieldwork in Vancouver and Calgary, Applied Silence spent the bounteous week of February 3 to 8 hiding from deep freeze and global hellscape, developing new work under the auspices of Playwrights Workshop Montreal. We made sundry sounds in the studio with fellow artists Ben Brown, Michael Feuerstack, Holly Gauthier-Frankel, and Nicolas Royer-Artuso. The PWM residency marks our maiden voyage to the world of Finisher, a song cycle about labour on land and sea, family-making and-breaking, and migration. More soon to come.
